Nobody Ever Washed a Rented Car

Planning at an organization’s annual conference. Among my opening comments I said: “A strategic planning process is not just a strategic process; it is a political one as well.” One senior level professional shouted out “I don’t get it.” He was not alone.

“Nobody ever washes a rented car”. Over the years, that quip as become one of my non-profit guiding lights. If we shared engagement and investment in our organization’s effort, then key stakeholders - current and prospective board members and donors, members of our professional teams and partner organizations must feel that they have a piece of ownership in the organization and its future. The worn fundraising adage “If you want money ask for advice; if you want advice ask for money” goes far beyond fundraising. Think if it this way: “If you want investment, ask for advice. Investment can mean money, but it also can mean time, leadership, and partnership.

Central to any strategic planning process is asking questions. And not just tactical questions such as, “how many programs should we plan each month?” – but strategic and generative questions: “How has the environment in which our organization changed?”  “How might we re-think or organization’s vision, mission, and priorities in this context?”

Thus, a strategic planning process is an ideal time to meaningfully engage current and prospective supporters, organization and community leaders and partners. It offers them an opportunity to be true partners in the organization’s future – and this partnership moves them beyond “renters” to shared owners.

A final saying: “No matter what you think, you are not the smartest person in the room.” Engaging leaders in your community will not only provide insights as your organization explores a path forward, but it also provides opportunities for those who both lead and work for your organization to learn and grow.
